Niru Kumar and TNKR Media Inc. are proud to announce the launch of Desiland, a podcast about modern Desi life in North America.
I’m Niru Kumar, and I am so excited to bring you a brand new one-of-a-kind podcast called Desiland! It’s about modern Desi life in this land of North America.
What’s a Desi, you ask? Good question. It’s what we – people who are from the South Asian part of the world but who live abroad – call ourselves. It’s a shorthand identifier, but as we’ll discover during the course of this podcast, it can lead to a misconception in the way Desi communities are understood.
This is a unique podcast because there’s nothing out there that’s dedicated to exploring issues affecting the 2 million South Asians in Canada, and the 4 million (and growing fast) in the US.
Because the truth is, we fit in… mostly… but sometimes we don’t!
For all you non-Desis out there who are thinking this podcast isn’t for you, think again!
Have you ever eaten Indian food? If so, you probably have some pretty strong opinions on what you like and what you don’t… how about spice? Curry? How much are you willing to pay? Stay tuned for our conversation with celebrity chef Vikram Vij, and much more, to tempt your palate!

Like politics? We’re producing a multi-part series called “Currying Votes” (pun intended!), talking all about ethnic voting blocks, multiculturalism and politics in Canada. It will feature Toronto Sun editor Adrienne Batra, former MP Ujjal Dosanjh, Terry Milewski and others.

Or maybe you’ve thought about wearing a saree to a wedding, wondered if Apu is a ‘politically correct’ character on the Simpsons, or just have a South Asian friend whose culture you’d like to learn more about… This is definitely the place for you.
And if you love to laugh like I do, we’ve got a real treat to kick off Desiland!
Our first guest is a rising star in the international comedy circuit. Sugar Sammy’s his stage name and he can do stand-up in not one language, but four; English, French, Hindi and Punjabi! (He told me he got his name, by the way, for letting women into nightclubs for free. What a character!)
He’s a huge international sensation in Quebec, France, Europe and Asia, and his shows are selling out right now across North America! And if you’re in Toronto, Sammy is performing THIS WEEK, February 14-16 but tickets are sold out!
But don’t worry, Canada, Sugar Sammy will be back with shows in Vancouver and Toronto in the fall. He’ll also be in Edmonton, Ottawa and Montreal. We’ll remind you about this again in a few months but all the details and tickets are at sugarsammy.com!
Sammy has recently won comedian of the year awards in BOTH Quebec and France, so you may want to reserve your fall tickets soon before he takes English Canada by storm next. Make sure you get out to see him…he never disappoints!
